Before and After School Enrichment Program at Tower-Soudan Elementary School

The program is offered before the start of the school day and after school until 6:00 PM.  Enrollment forms are available at the school office or by contacting Amy Hinkel 218-780-5862.

If you are interested in child care for Learning Readiness through 6th grade students enrolled in the Tower-Soudan School please contact Amy Hinkel, supervisor of the Before and After School Enrichment Program.

Students enrolled in the program on the day of youth classes/activities listed below will be admitted with no additional charge to the activity.  Please send in registration forms for each activity to reserve space as some classes have limited spaces that fill up and we want to give everyone equal chance at all activities.

Learn to Unicycle

Unicycling can be very beneficial for youth development.  In addition to increased strength and balance skills, young riders are often the quickest to gain confidence and increase attention span.  Chimpy will be offering skill-building classes after school in the school gym.  All ages are welcome.  Snack provided.  Parents must pick-up child at 3:30 sharp!  Parental permission required before you start class with completed Waiver of Liability and Registration form.

Balloon Magic!

Kids can learn how to tie a balloon as expertly as any clown can.  Making balloon animals is an art as well as a form of amusement and entertainment.  Balloon art is fun for kids of all ages! Join Chimpy to learn this art and have fun.  Snack provided.

Winter Crafts

Ice Skating Party

Chimpy will again be hosting skating parties after school at the Soudan Skating Rink on specified dates.  Parties will be offered until the ice conditions no longer allow skating.  Food will be served inside the warming shack.  The events are free of charge.  Stop by for fun, food and games.  Beginner skaters welcome! There will be plenty of newly sharpened loaner skates available.  Boot skaters are also welcome out on the rink.  Watch for your school backpack flyers and the Timberjay and Tower News for the latest skating news!  Thanks to the many businesses and individuals that make these skating events possible!  Without your monetary contributions and food donations, these events would not be possible.

Parenting Workshops

If you are new to the whole adventure, or a seasoned mom or dad wondering if what you are doing is right, this is a series for you.  Each class will feature a lesson from Dr. James Dobson, a leading voice in the culture of strengthening families with some follow-up discussion.  Come to as many classes as you like.  Each class is independent from the class before it, and requires no previous knowledge or experience.  All classes are free of charge and will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 10 Central Blvd in Babbitt and repeated the following week in Ely at the First Lutheran Church, 915 E Camp St in Ely.  Classes are subject to change.  Please call Pastor Jonathan Varns at 218-235-8493 for more information.  Registration is not required, but is requested.  Babysitting may be provided if needed; please call Pastor Varns to arrange.

 

Bringing Up Girls: Monday, October 22 in Babbitt or Monday, October 29 in Ely at 6 to 8 pm. This class will equip you to help face the challenges of raising your daughters to become healthy, happy, and successful women who overcome challenges specific to girls and women today and who ultimately excel in life.

 

Bringing Up Boys: Monday, November 19 in Babbitt or Monday, November 26 in Ely at 6 to 8 pm.  The class will provide caring, effective ways of raising boys to make healthy decisions in life, based on extensive research.

 

The Strong-Willed Child: Monday, January 21 in Babbitt or Monday, January 28 in Ely, at 6 to 8 pm.  The class will discuss the most effective methods of guidance and discipline for parents who are struggling to raise and teach children who are convinced they should be able to live by their own rules.

 

Dare to Discipline: Monday, February 18 in Babbitt or Monday, February 25 at 6 to 8 pm. Get much-needed answers to your toughest parenting questions to help you lead your children through their critical years and meet their needs of love, trust, affection, and discipline.

 

Love for a Lifetime: Monday, March 18 in Babbitt or Monday, March 25 in Ely at 6 to 8 pm. challenging couples as they look at culture and gender differences through the generations and the impact upon marriages, and addressing hot topics that often hinder a marriage relationship including money issues, busyness, and over commitment.

'Rock of Ages'

It's 1987 on Hollywood's Sunset Strip when a small-town girl meets a big city rocker. As they fall in love in L.A.'s most famous rock club, Rock of Ages allows fans to rock out once again to their favorite '80s hits. Featuring the music of iconic bands such as Styx, Poison, Twisted Sister and Whitesnake, among many others, this tenth anniversary production features a dynamic new cast revisiting the larger than life characters and exhilarating story that turned Rock of Ages into a global phenomenon.

Join us on this day trip on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 with Community Education.  The cost of this day trip includes deluxe motor-coach (restroom on the bus), roundtrip, bus fare and matinee show ticket. We will make a short stop at Tobies in Hinckley on the way down.  Pick up a snack there or bring a bag lunch.  Dinner will be on your own at Union Bar & Grill in Minneapolis after the play or at the restaurant of your choice nearby.  (Cost is not included in your trip fee; you pay out-of-pocket for dinner.)  You must indicate if you will be having dinner at Union Bar and Grill when you register for the trip in order for us to make a reservation for you.  (You may also bring a bag dinner.) 

Registrations for the trip are limited to 30 people. There are no refunds for cancellation unless seat(s) can be sold to another party. All patrons will be refunded if the trip is cancelled due to lack of registrations. Please contact your local Community Education Coordinator for an itinerary, more information, or to register. Students 17 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Performance may not be suitable for younger children. All seats must be reserved and paid in full by Friday, December 7, 2018 at 5:00 P.M.

This escorted trip is Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019; Bus leaves the Virginia Village Inn Restaurant at 9:00 A.M., Cherry School parking lot at 9:30 A.M. and South Ridge School parking lot at 10:30 A.M.  Return to South Ridge School at 8:45 P.M., Cherry School at 9:45 P.M., and Virginia Village Inn at 10:15 P.M.  Additional pick-up/drop-off locations available upon request. Cost is $110 per person.

Travel to St. Paul by deluxe motor-coach bus to watch the Minnesota Wild play the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. - no need to worry about traffic or paying for parking! The cost of this day trip includes deluxe motor-coach (restroom on the bus), roundtrip, bus fare and game ticket. Christmas Luncheon and Wassail Concert at Old Rittenhouse Inn, Bayfield, Wisconsin

Join us on this deluxe motor-coach bus trip on Dec. 8 to the Old Rittenhouse Inn in Bayfield, Wisconsin for a 3-course Christmas luncheon paired with a concert of holiday music performed by the Rittenhouse Singers, a professional vocal choir backed by local musicians and directed by Innkeeper, Jerry Phillips.

Bingo on First Monday’s

Senior Bingo will again be held in Tower on the 1st Monday of the month starting on Sept 10 (2nd Monday due to Labor Day), all other dates are Oct. 1, Nov. 5, and Dec. 3. There will be no Bingo in January.  Tower Civic Center – 11:45 a.m. – 3 p.m.   There is a $10 charge for the bingo party, which includes lunch.  All ages are welcome to attend this community event.  Lunch is served starting at 11:45 a.m., and bingo begins at 12:45 p.m.  Senior Bingo is organized by the Friends of the Vermilion Country Charter School.  Questions, call Jodi Summit at 218-753-2950.  In case of inclement weather, please call 218-753-2950.  If Tower-Soudan Elementary School is cancelled due to poor weather, bingo will be cancelled.

Creative Card Making Workshop--Birthday Cards

Create 8 Birthday cards with various themes and styles.  Be ready for all those upcoming Birthdays with special handmade cards that you will create in this workshop. $28 fee must be paid in 1 week in advance before the class.  ($25 materials and $3 Community Education fee).

Good Morning Yoga in Tower

  1. morning yoga class will increase your flexibility, build endurance, help you breathe more easily and reduce stress. Bring a mat or use one of our mats at no cost. This class is for all levels even if you are a beginner. Let yoga meet you where you are at in your body and spirit! Defensive Driving – 4-Hour Refresher Course

The 4-hour refresher course is offered for drivers 55 years of age and older who have previously completed an 8-hour beginner’s course and who need to re-certify to continue receiving a discount on their car insurance.  A certificate of completion will be given to participants to continue the 10% car insurance discount.  Check your certificate or check with your car insurance agent to learn when you need to recertify.  Dana Waldron is the instructor for the class offered under AARP.  Class fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for Non-members.  Payment is payable to the instructor on the day of class.  You must pre-register so we can plan accordingly for class space and materials.  Please call or text Leone Graf to pre-register at 218-343-3744.  If no answer, please leave a message.

Defensive Driving – 8 Hour Beginner Class

Drivers age 55 and older can save money on your car insurance premiums and become a better driver.  Minnesota law requires insurance companies to offer you up to a 10% reduction for 3 years upon course completion.  Check with your insurance agent for details.  The course is two 4-hour sessions of classroom which includes a video, workbook and class discussion.  There are no driving or test requirements.  You must attend both 4-hour sessions to receive credit and a certificate of completion required by your insurance company.
